I have been a fan of Romance Was Born since I first set eyes upon them. Each year I buy myself a dress for my birthday and you’ll constantly find me in David Jones playing amongst the Romance Was Born clothing. (Me in David Jones is like a little girl playing dress ups, I frolic, twirl and there is a lot of ooos and ahhhhs)
Their show last year was incredible. I find theatrical based shows so much better than the traditional runway. The garments were spot on and the collaboration with Shoes Of Prey was to die for. Naturally I had doubts if this could be topped, there was even confusion when I found out they weren't actually producing a runway show but instead an exhibition.
Reflected Glory, a collaboration with Romance Was Born and artist Rebecca Baumann set in the beautiful backdrop of the Carriage Works, went above and beyond any expectations I had. Rebecca’s kinetic sculptures and colourful installations worked perfectly against the rustic interior of the Carriage Works. There is colourful tiles, cellophane and an excellent use of light. While I was researching Rebecca I realised that she is actually one of my favourite artist, she has a piece at the MCA which I adore, I just never new that it was hers. Small world.
Rebecca’s work worked so well with the garments; actually I’m not even sure if I’ll call them garments more masterpieces. They were made from tinsel, bedazzled tees, tiles, basically every reflective material you could find. The prints were insane, which I’ve been told from a fantastic source, will make their way into the ready to wear collection. Each piece represented a milestone, which gets you thinking how ‘Reflected Glory’ can be seen as both literal and metaphorical.
In short this exhibition is amazing. Rebecca, Anna and Luke are all incredibly talented and everyone should go see this before it closes on the 11th of May.
