All my life plans are being tossed away, instead I am becoming an air hostess for Virgin Atlantic. I kid, but with the release of the uniforms designed by no other than my idol and Queen of Punk Rock Vivienne Westwood, it could become an option.
The uniform, which launched a few days ago, has been put I trail since the collaboration was announced last May. The uniform, which will be worn by 7,500 Virgin Atlantic staff, is designed to be comfortable and durable while also being of an original design and using sustainable fabrics. The female uniforms are made from polyester, produced from recycled plastic bottles, while the men's uniforms are made from wool.
“She (Westwood) was the natural choice to redesign the uniform across all areas of our business. Firstly because original design and sustainability are vital to both Virgin Atlantic and Vivienne Westwood. And this long term partnership brings those ideals together in an exciting and innovative collaboration.” - Virgin Atlantic
The details incorporated into the designs are very Westwood. The Female Cabin Crew uniform includes a bright red blazer which features a gathered waist and high collar. Teamed with a matching pencil skirt with a hemline which slopes into a back pleat. Of course this wouldn't be complete without a double breasted coat, red heels with the Westwood signature hourglass heel and a matching red leather handbag.
The Male Cabin Crew uniform is in the form of a three piece suit in either deep burgundy or grey. The oversize collar is also a feature in the menswear and of course there is an oxford weave wool coat to help with the varying climates and altitude. The flight crew uniform is the same for both sexes containing a dark charcoal tailored suit and a single breasted coat. The difference being that female staff receive a cravat while the males wear a tie.
My favourite part of this collection is the hand drawn wing detailing which occurs through out. It reminds me a lot of the orb in Westwood's personal collections which makes me extremely perfect. The uniforms will be jet setting round the world from Sept 1st.
