LFW: Vivienne Westwood Red Label SS15

Queen Westwood, as I like to call her, used her Spring Summer 15 runway show to convey a very important political message this week - that the people of Scotland should vote yes. Now I'm not going to get into semantics about whether they should or not, I have no idea and honestly the whole thing baffles me, but I love that Westwood is more then just a designer. This isn't the first time she's gotten political with ties to climate change campagains, civil rights group Liberty, she openly backs Julian Assange and was an active campaigner for nuclear disarmament.

On arrival to the show buyers and journalists were handed a newsletter titled 'Democracy In The UK', inside read the message: “It could be the turning point towards a better world. They could lead by example.

Scottish Independence could be a great day for Democracy, they already have a more democratic financial system, eg no tuition fees, and they care more for people. They just wouldn’t do what we’re doing in England ... In England there is hardly any democracy left. The government does what it wants. That which should belong to people – it gives it all to business.”

The activism continued on the runway with models sporting 'Yes' badges, making it obvious where Westwoods opinion lies. The statement didn't draw away from the main focus though the clothing.

Unlike past collections, where tailoring has been a main focal point, this collection saw soft silk draped dresses come down the runway in a beautiful faded colour pallet of apricots, creams and pale blues.

Of course there was still traditional quirky Westwood designs like lace-edged underskirts attached to webbing straps and power suits with exaggerated detailing such as broad shoulders and oversized lapels. With the end approaching it seems that her signature sculpted bust gowns weren't going to make the cut this year, but near the end they appeared in both a very busy and oversized vintage floral print and also an amazing black lace.

With the show having so many interesting twists and turns it wasn't surprising that Viv did her lap of the runway to the Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen' not only taking her back to her roots but also her current political stand.
